As your District Court Judge, my philosophy centers on impartiality, adherence to the rule of law, proportional sentencing, respectful dispute resolution, and maintaining public confidence in the judiciary, often through community engagement and ensuring access to justice.
As your current Gratiot Co. Prosecutor, Laura Bever represents the People of the State of Michigan in criminal matters before the District and Circuit Courts, juvenile matters, parental neglect, and other actions in the Circuit Court Family Division and Probate Court.
Ms. Bever has made significant improvements to the Prosecutors Office through new efficient and effective paperless computer records systems which expedite the handling of prosecutorial interactions with the courts.
New initiatives and interactions with the courts, law enforcement agencies and community groups have also improved communications and cooperative efforts and as your District Court Judge, will continue to seek future opportunities to maintain and improve those interactions with a common theme to benefit those in Gratiot County.

Ms. Bever was appointed Gratiot County Prosecuting Attorney in April 2023, after long serving Prosecutor Keith Kushion retired during his last 4 year term. Ms. Bever was serving as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney when she was appointed by 29th Circuit Court Judges Cori Barkman and Shannon Schlegel to complete the term. Prosecutor Bever was subsequently elected to the position in 2024.
She received her Juris Doctorate with honors from Wayne State University Law School and her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan. Bever began her career in Detroit at the Dykema Law Firm before returning to Alma to practice law. She acquired Stewart McDonald's law practice when he became District Court Judge. She subsequently served as the Attorney Referee for the 29th Circuit Court Family Division. Ms. Bever graduated from the Alma High School, is married and has 3 adult children.
Laura Bever is seeking the position of Gratiot Co. Laura volunteers on the Alma High School Athletic Hall of Fame board, currently serving as a governance member for the MyMichigan Health Board of Directors and was a longtime board member of MyMichigan Health Alma where she served as board president, and is currently a board member of Facing Addiction Now. Ms. Bever is a board member of the Gratiot County Community Foundation, and has served as a Gratiot County Commissioner and Board Chairman.
Ms. Bever also serves as an advisor on the Character and Fitness Committee for the candidates for admission to the State of Michigan Bar under the direction and authority of the Board of Law Examiners and Michigan Supreme Court.
